šŸ”„ Hot take: iTerm is still my preferred terminal application

For a really long time, I was waiting for Ghostty to be released, and finally, in December last year, it happened. But, for me, it was a bit of a letdown - I mean, Ghostty is nice, it’s sleek and fast, probably faster at rendering text than iTerm - but I’ve never really felt that iTerm was particularly slow at that šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø

And now, 3 months after Ghostty’s release, I’m still using iTerm, because iTerm has so many more “quality of life features” that I can’t live without.

Here are some of the most important features:

  • Text triggers that highlight important text, e.g., in log files
  • Background badges that can provide context to the shell
  • Tabs at the bottom of the window (Must have)
  • Environment variables like $ITERM_SESSION_ID that indicate which window and tab a particular shell lives in, once again providing context to the shell

and iTerm is fast enough
